POST 1 – WHAT IS TUINA?
By Alan McIntyre.
If you have not heard about Tuina and are not sure what it is or you might have tried Tuina massage but wanted to know a bit more about it then please read on. The word “Tuina” is made up of two words, “Tui” meaning to push or stroke, and “Na” meaning to grasp or knead. However, Tuina is pronounced, “Tway-na”. So please don’t use the more commonly assumed ‘Tuna’ approximation, even if you think it might have more comedy value! So fundamentally Tuina or Chinese Tuina massage is a manipulative therapy. It primarily uses the practitioner’s thumbs, fingers and palms, working without needles or other instruments with the intension of bringing about health and wellness. Practitioners may also complement massage treatments with acupuncture, herbal remedies, and dietary therapy and exercise recommendations.
What is so special about Tuina massage? Tuina massage has a History that can be traced back around 3000 to 5000 years and originates in China. Tuina is also known as Chinese Medical Massage and so is defined as a medical procedure for treating various diseases, injuries, and disorders. Tuina massage has been given this level of definition because it is, a vital component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, (or TCM). It is also influenced nearly all forms of massage and manual therapies worldwide. One example of this influence is a form of Tuina which involves massaging the palms, feet, and ears. Massaging specific points on these locations has a direct correlation and influence on related internal organs and other parts of the limbs, according to Chinese medicine. This form of Tuina massage was taken to the West where it was repackaged into what is called Reflexology today.
